These are taught in Year 12. There is a wide range of subjects from which to choose.
Students are assessed and examined in these subjects and at the end of Year 12 can be awarded a nationally recognised qualification, an Advanced Subsidiary.
All students hoping to follow AS courses must have at least 5 grade Cs at GCSE, including a grade C in each of their chosen subjects. However, there are a few exceptions where the subject was not taken or offered at GCSE level.
Students taking AS courses should study 4 subjects. There will be the possibility to add AS General Studies, as an extra AS Level, to this programme.
A2 Courses
These courses are studied in Year 13.
AS courses lead to A2 courses in the second year in the Sixth Form. At the end of Year 12, students who have gained, at least, 3 passes in their AS courses will select which courses to continue with and take as full advanced courses.
Students generally continue with 3 courses to full Advanced Level. Students may also choose to discontinue study of a further subject and take up a different AS course in Year 13 in order to widen their curriculum base or prepare for specific course requirements for Higher Education.
A2 courses are examined and assessed at the end of Year 13 and students gain the nationally recognised full Advanced Level award.
UCAS tariff points are calculated on both AS and A Level qualifications. 60 points are awarded for a grade A at AS Level and 120 points for a grade A at A level.
Level Two Options
This is taught in Year 12. We offer are range of subjects but Business is the only option regularly taken. This year we are also offering Science and Media courses (depending on numbers of students wanting to follow these courses).
Students can also resit English, Maths and Science GCSE.
Normal entry requirements for this course are 4 GCSEs at grade E or above.
Students completing a Level Two course successfully may then continue on to Advanced Level courses for a further one or two years. A merit is usually required to do this.
The Level Two option helps students to build personal confidence, as well as better numeracy, communication and organisation skills. Students are now regularly getting to university having started this option and having spent 3 years in the Sixth Form.
Citizenship, PSE and General Studies
Students in the Sixth Form follow a programme which is designed to help them prepare for life when they leave Wrenn School. The programme includes a continuation of the careers programme and a full induction into choosing courses at university and applying for Higher Education. Other issues, such as health education, finance, political awareness and current affairs are addressed through a programme which combines outside speakers with workshops and group activities. The programme is a vital part of life in the Sixth Form and is subject to regular evaluation and review by students and staff to ensure it meets the needs of Sixth Formers. PSE and General Studies sessions are held once a week for all Sixth Formers. They provide a chance to raise and discuss issues, celebrate achievement, share information and receive visitors. Assemblies complement this programme and support the community ethos of the Sixth Form.
