science

The biggest department in the school, the science department benefits from a large team of 14 teaching staff and 4 dedicated technicians.

The department has access to 11 laboratories and is well resourced with up to date equipment which is used regularly as part of an investigation based approach to learning.
As well as our day-to-day teaching, you may well come in to contact with us in the community. We currently work with 12 local primary and junior schools, helping them to deliver their science curriculum or supporting them by organising activities days.

Key Stage 3 Science

Key Stage 3 Science is taught through a number of topics such as Forces, Reactions of Metals and Sound and Hearing.

Assessment is via topic tests and/or assessing pupil progress tasks (APP) as they complete each topic. The pupils maintain a portfolio of these tasks from Year 7,and the results of these appear on the nine week reports.

There are four Attainment Targets in Science, these are:

AF1 Thinking Scientifically
AF2 Understanding the applications and implications of Science
AF3 Communicating and Collaborating in Science
AF4 Using Investigative Approaches
AF5 Working critically with evidence

This is taught through the medium of the scientific content of AT 1-4.

Key Stage 4 Science

All students follow the AQA Science course with the vast majority of students completing the CORE and ADDITIONAL science syllabus’. However, we also offer the most able students the opportunity of studying towards separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, while those students in the Star and Vocational groups will complete the Core syllabus over two years.
The assessments for all of these courses are described below.

CORE Science (completed during Year 10)

  • 6 Multiple choice module tests, each contributing 12.5% towards the qualification
These tests are completed in November, March and June/July of Year 10.
  • Practical test (ISA) contributing 25% towards the qualification
A number of ISA’s may be attempted with the best score being used. They are completed at appropriate times during Year 10.

ADDITIONAL Science (completed during Year 11)

  • 3 Written examination papers (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) each contributing 25% towards the qualification
These are completed during January and June/July of Year 11.
  • Practical test (ISA) contributing 25% towards the qualification
A number of ISA’s may be attempted with the best score being used. They are completed at appropriate times during Year 11.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Each of these courses is examined using the same format although the exact dates of examinations may vary from teaching group to teaching group.

  • Two multiple choice module tests completed during November and March of Year 10 - 25% of the qualification
  • 1 Written examination paper completed in the January of Year 11 - 25% of the qualification
  • 1 Written examination paper completed in the June/July of Year 11 - 25% of the qualification

The examinations above are identical to those taken for the CORE and ADDITIONAL GCSE’s

  • Practical test (ISA) contributing 25% towards the qualification
A number of ISA’s may be attempted with the best score being used. They are completed at appropriate times during Years 10 and 11.

Homework

All students are set homework at least once per week. However it is normal for those in Years 10 and 11 to be set two per week and those in the sixth form to be given a self-study task every lesson. Teachers in the department will endeavour to make sure students are recording the tasks set into their homework diaries; however, this remains the responsibility of the students. Homework tasks may vary in length with longer activities being set over more than one week.
Tasks may include:

  • Research / background reading (particularly relevant in the sixth form)
  • Consolidation of prior learning
  • Extension work
