Our aims: • To make maths enjoyable • To enable all pupils to achieve their potential in mathematics • To enable all students to use mathematics with confidence
Our courses
Key stage 3 Years 7, 8 and 9 On entry to Wrenn all year 7 pupils are placed in sets according to their prior attainment and ability, KS2 results and information from their previous school are used to do this. The teaching groups are regularly monitored and reviewed to allow for easy movement between them when necessary. Topics are taught in two-week blocks using a core text of ‘Maths Frameworking’. These are differentiated textbooks, which ensure pupils are provided with the appropriate level of work. There are also supplementary activities, worksheets and extension tasks. An emphasis is also placed on mental maths and lessons begin with activities which re-enforce this. Programmes of study closely follow the National Numeracy Strategy.
Pupils who need extra help are given additional support and those with established skills are stretched using extension resources. Problem solving and investigations are an integral part of KS3 courses and there are opportunities for group work and discussions. Pupils are assessed during each unit and there are formal tests after each set of two topics. There is a nine week reporting schedule to enable us to keep parents regularly informed of their child’s progress. Towards the end of the academic year pupils sit an examination to determine their National Curriculum level. Key Stage 4 Year 10 Pupils are grouped according to their ability using KS3 assessments and evidence from their KS3 teacher. The department uses a variety of texts specifically chosen to meet the needs of each group. These courses lead to an award of a GCSE in mathematics in Year 11. The GCSE is assessed by three modular exams that take place in both Years 10 and 11. Each exam is available in Foundation and Higher levels and consists of both a calculator and non-calculator part. Less able pupils are also offered assessment in Entry level Numeracy skills and the more able pupils are offered a second GCSE examination in Statistics.
Years 11 Pupils are grouped according to their ability using KS3 assessments and evidence from their KS3 teacher. The department uses a variety of texts specifically chosen to meet the needs of each group. These courses lead to GCSE examinations at Foundation and Higher levels at the end of year 11. The assessment consists of two written papers, one of which is non-calculator. Less able pupils are also offered assessment in Entry level Numeracy skills and the more able pupils are offered a second GCSE examination in Statistics.
Key Stage 5 The A level course offered is based on six modules. Year 12 students who opt for Mathematics join the AS level course. On satisfactory completion of AS level, Year 13 students can choose to go on and study for the full A2 level. Students have the opportunity to study Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics. For those students with exceptional flair for mathematics, a Further Mathematics AS and A2 level is available through negotiation with the Head of Department.
Able pupils In conjunction with the Royal Institute of Mathematics Wrenn School organises and hosts an annual series of Mathematics Masterclasses to which invitations are also offered to gifted students from other local schools.
Competitions: The mathematics department runs competitions for pupils. Prizes are presented to the winners. National mathematics competition entries are encouraged and we enter pupils from years 7 to 13. Mathematics enrichment events and puzzle activities take place throughout the year. Calculators: In addition to basic equipment like pen, pencil and ruler, all pupils will need to have a calculator; the school library sells a suitable model.
