Wrenn school places a strong emphasis on the teaching and using of ICT. This department reflects the constantly changing technology in the real world with regularly updating the curriculum covered and resources used.

Aim of the ICT Department
To stimulate interest and learn practical skills that can be used in a variety of situations.

In Summer 2008, students achieved 100% pass rate in the Level 2 ICT OCR Nationals. Congratulations to 3 students in particular who achieved 4 award – 2 of which gained A*A*AA.

Software
A wide range of industry standard and specialist software is used.
All students may have regular ICT lessons throughout their schooling at Wrenn.

During Key stage 3 pupils have 1 dedicated ICT lesson a week, whilst in Key Stage 4 a variety of pathways are offered. ICT KS5 is an increasingly popular option amongst sixth formers.

Curriculum
In Years 7 and 8 students cover a wide variety of software applications in order to be able to use the computer to create presentations, spreadsheets, databases, web browsing and website creation. Word Processing, Desktop publishing and control technology are also taught in Key Stage 3.

They follow a curriculum based on the highly regarded Smart Skills Builder scheme. These are in the process of being revised following new Government guidelines – particularly with regards to incorporating additional content, e-safety (a topic that has been taught at Wrenn for several years within ICT!)

Year 9, whilst still building on the KS3 National Curriculum, one of the additional aims for year 9 is to a programme of accelerated learning. This enables many students to produce coursework that can be used during KS4, towards an ICT OCR National qualification. This approach last year was very successful; a record number of students opted for ICT in KS4.

KS4: Years 10 and 11
An exciting new range of courses were recently released, under the umbrella of OCR nationals. These enable students to achieve an award equivalent to 1, 2, 3 or 4 GCSEs. Students work towards Level 1 or 2 OCR Nationals in ICT. This is a coursework based qualification, with no examination. Students have the opportunity to gain between 1 and 4 GCSE equivalent passes. This course is proving very popular with students.

The ICT department have worked very hard to successfully implement this course. Results for option groups have been very successful in the past – the last couple of years results were good with 72% and 80% gaining A* - C grades in 2006 and 2007 respectively. However the first cohort of students completing the ICT OCR Nationals produced very pleasing results – every student passing, gaining at least one Pass, equivalent to a GCSE grade C. Average of 2.2 awards per students, with 20% of students gained Distinctions, and almost 40% achieved a Merit grade.

Homework Policy
KS3: During Key Stage 3 it is the Department’s aim to set appropriate homework once every 3 lessons, in line with the school policy.
KS4: In Years 10 and 11 students will be working on coursework. They will be working to deadlines which will be ongoing.

Resources
There are 6 dedicated computer suites with colour printers and scanners. The computers are regularly updated, and so none will be more than 4 years old. These are installed with a wide variety of industry standard and specialist software packages. The Department are keen to develop photography, running a variety of after school clubs and enrichment activities, and as a result have a DSLR camera as well as numerous digital cameras. The computer rooms are almost always open at lunchtimes, offering support for homework or coursework as well as leisure activities.
