Key Stage Three: Years 7, 8 and 9 The aim in the first three years is to give all pupils a sound, broad general education in line with National Curriculum requirements, whilst also preparing them for the examination courses which they will follow later.
In Year Seven, all pupils study the same range of subjects, building on their Key Stage 2 experiences. In Years 8 and 9, there are some slight variations in the subjects studied by different pupils and groupings will vary according to ability in some subjects.
All pupils in all classes are encouraged to achieve their individual best.
Key Stage Four: Years 10 and 11 For most pupils the backbone of their school course is in the work they do in Years Ten and Eleven. Although the course is still wide-ranging, pupils have a measure of choice in what subjects they study. Almost all of the subject courses offered lead to GCSE and other recognised examinations at the end of Year 11.
The curriculum for Years 10 and 11 follows National Curriculum requirements. The present situation is as follows: every pupil studies Mathematics, English Language, Science, Physical Education, Personal Social and Health Education, RE and ICT. Pupils are then given the opportunity to study up to a further four subjects to form their programme of study.
Optional Courses. The subjects available include: Geography, History, RE, Art, Drama, Music, Dance, PE, Spanish, French, Latin, Gujarati, Business, Studies, ICT, Food Technology, Child Development, Graphics, Resistant Material, Textiles, Youth Award and Media Studies. Vocational courses include: Leisure and Tourism, Health and Social Care, Applied Art, ICT, Business Studies Double Award and Engineering. Parents are involved at all stages in the procedure for making these subject choices. Details of this procedure are given at a special meeting for Year Nine parents. Pupils are also given a booklet explaining the choices and giving full details of the subject available. There is a great deal of guidance as to which subject would be most suitable for each pupil and what level of study would be most likely to lead to success.
Sex Education The School Policy on Sex Education is available on request from the School. The main points are that facts are to be presented in a balanced and objective manner and teaching will be in the context of personal relationships and responsibilities with due regard for religious, cultural and moral considerations and to family life and follows government advice on education about AIDS.
Factual biological information is provided in Science lessons in the earlier years, supplemented by information and discussion on relationships, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases in the later years. The School Nurse and other members of the School community contribute to the teaching of this course. Parents have the statutory right to withdraw their children from sex education. Any parent wishing to do so should write to the Head Teacher in the first instance.
