USE OF CARS BY SIXTH FORMERS

The school has tried to adopt a supportive approach towards those Sixth Formers who have found that the most cost-effective method of travel to and from school has been the use of their own car or the family car.

This has created headaches over parking on the School site, where the amount of space is limited at the best of time; parking in surrounding streets or on verges, where neighbours inevitably complain; excessive speeds in and around the School area; and misuse of cars between the School’s sites.

You can help us to manage these problems. Vehicles and student movement around the School are serious issues: please help us to provide a safe and secure environment for all.

Sixth Form parking will only be available at the top car par (beside the Music block) on Broadway. No unregistered student cars will be allowed. To obtain a reserved space, the car and driver must be registered with Mrs Mayes and the correct documentation must be brought in for checking. The student must then display the permit whilst on school premises if their application is successful.

We invite the Driving Standards Agency into school to speak to the Sixth Form on an annual basis. This gives a face-to-face reminder about safe driving (as well as how to get started). However the links below will take you (and your parents) to sites on this subject that are informative and easy to use. We recommend that you refer to them regularly.

The essential thing to remember is that, as you will probably have already found out, young drivers (between 17 and 25) are very expensive to insure. This is because they have more accidents.
You can ensure that you reduce your chances of an accident by:

  1. Reducing your speed. Remember the speed limit is the maximum speed for that road. In certain weather conditions or at busy times you may well need to drive more slowly.
  2. Concentrating on the task at hand; driving. It is obviously illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving, but even chatting to passengers can reduce you concentration. Be aware of the road and look for potential hazards.
  3. Taking Pass Plus
  4. Discussing (and even signing) a Parent and Young Drivers agreement

If you want to bring a car to school you must submit an application form. You will also need to bring into school your license, registration documents and insurance details.  Further information may be obtained from Mrs Mayes.
