Design and Technology prepares students for tomorrow's rapidly changing technologies. Our aim is for students to become autonomons and creative problems solvers, both as individuals and in teams. They are all encouraged to look for needs and opportunities in the world around us and they respond to them by developing and making a variety of products.
Key Stage 3 All pupils are given the opportunity to learn new skills, knowledge and expertise using a wide range of materials, including metal, wood, plastic, card, textiles and food. All tasks are targeted to ensure the maximum coverage of the National Curriculum programmes of study whilst at the same time allowing each pupil to gain personal success at his or her own level. Students will complete twelve units of work over the key stage based on a variety of topics, e.g. 'Ready Steady Cook', 'Working with Wood', Metal for Decorative Purposes', 'Designing a Board Game' and 'Creating Designer Bags'. Students' entitlement called 'Licence to Cook' is included in the three food units.
Resource tasks are carried out to build up a student's experience, knowledge and skills. These lead on to capability tasks, which utilises these skills. Progress is mapped using the school's 9-week assessment schedule with a final National Curriculum level for DT given at the end of the key stage.
Key Stage 4 Design and Technology is optional at Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to follow a variety of courses. These are:
GCSE
DT Food Technology
DT Graphic Products
DT Resistant Materials
DT Textiles Technology
These are offered as a full GCSE qualification or at Entry Level for some students. The specifications require students to complete a Design and Make project of their choice, worth 60% of the final grade and a written examination, which is 40%.
The department also offers vocational courses in GCSE Child Development and GCSE Engineering Double Award.
Homework All students are set homework at least once a week, however, the time spent on homework will increase as students progress through the Key Stages.
Extra Curricular and Enrichment Activities
The 'F-Club' is a popular after school cookery club run by Miss Allen. Pupils learn how to eat healthy, grow their own produce and have fun! See the F-Club's website.
After school DT Club called 'Funky Frames' is where pupils can make a variety of products under the guidance of Ms Parkinson.
A Level and GCSE students are able to attend after school sessions to work on their projects.
Every year students are involved in enrichment activities that take place in the County. Year 7 gifted and talented students attend the 'Design to Go' day held at Wicksteed Park. 'F1 in Schools' is another popular competition with the engineering groups. In the past, this has been held at the Castle Theatre and Rockingham Speedway. The engineers in the sixth form also go out on a series of visits to explore the role of the engineer. Other activities which take place are competitions run by the local Rotary Club and visits to museums, such as the Victoria & Albert in London. We also have visitors in school to work with various groups e.g. Mothers and babies for Child Development.
Resources The department has access to nine purpose built workshops and an ICT suite, all of which are well resourced with up to date equipment. the most recent acquisition is a laser cutter and other CAD/CAM machines capable of working with textiles, wood, plastic, metal and card.
In Design and Technology we believe in giving pupils traditional skills training in addition to developing their ability to work with the latest technology.
