Everyone speaks English right?
Certainly not! FACT: Only 5.6 % of the world’s total population speaks English. The number doubles when people when you count people who speak English as a second or third language but this means that only 10% of the world population speaks English and 90% doesn’t!
The world is getting smaller. Faster travel and the internet link people across all continents and language barriers as never before. In these fast changing times, speaking English is no longer an advantage. Instead, it’s those with broader language skills who are likely to have the edge. Further education institutions, universities and employers are recognising this and remember that while it may be difficult to become really fluent in a foreign language, it is relatively easy to achieve a working knowledge
Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages can greatly help your brain function. Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for travelling. It will make you smarter, help your decision making ability and even better at English!

What will students learn?
GCSE in French and Spanish (OCR):
The course is designed to help students to cope with situations which they might meet when working in an international context. It covers topics such as the world of work, sports, health, leisure as well as travel and tourism.

Polish GCSE (OCR) :
This is a course for students who already have a knowledge of the language. Like all GCSE language courses, it addresses the four main skill areas; Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. This course can be chosen as a language course on its own or in combination with a French or Spanish GCSE. Some students who have not studied French or Spanish may be directed to take this GCSE.
Please note that a sufficient level of English is required for this course. Speak to Mrs Norris to find out if you would be able to cope with the demand of the course.

The two year course will follow the OCR syllabus. It is similar to other Modern Languages such as French, Spanish etc. The new syllabus is devised to promote the target language (Gujarati) testing, whereby pupils will be required to answer the questions in Gujarati in their GCSE exam.
The course is based on the four Areas of Experience of the National Curriculum and will test all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
For those of you who have already studied Gujarati, we recommend that you consider this subject as one of your options as students in the past have been very successful at GCSE level Gujarati.

How will students be assessed?
There will be examinations in Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing
Homework is set at least once a week and will vary in content depending on the unit of work studied at the time. Work set for homework may include vocabulary learning , spelling tests, independent research, reading comprehension tasks, worksheets, project-based tasks or extended writing tasks. Students should expect to spend at least 30 minutes per week on their homework task.
