The number of pupils registered at the school in September 2009 was 1514.
Pupils are admitted aged 11 without reference to ability, race, gender or creed. The number of intended admissions for the year commencing 1st September 2009 will be 250 (9 forms of entry with 28 pupils in each class).
The school has been oversubscribed for 15 years. In 2008 the parents of 589 children expressed a preference for Wrenn School. There are at present 250 children in Year 7.
Year 7 Admissions Wrenn School is a co-educational, non-denominational foundation school providing education for pupils in the 11-18 age ranges. From September 2004 the school was designated as a Specialist Science College. The Admission of children is the responsibility of the governors under admission arrangements made between the governors, the local admissions forum and the Secretary of State for children, Schools and Families.
Pupils are admitted aged 11 without reference to ability, race, gender or creed. It is the governor’s intention to ensure that the school is genuinely comprehensive and that the intake covers the full ability range. Of the places that are available, the expectation is that pupils with a whole range of different talents will be accommodated; from those with a high academic ability seeking a place on the gifted and talented project, through to top musicians and sports people, to those who are just happy to be at school.
Up to 10% of places will be allocated based on the aptitude of pupils in Information Technology established by a test taken at the school.
Over subscription Following the allocation of places to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school as appropriate provision, when there are more applications for places than there are places available, priority will be given in the following order:
Children in public care (looked after children)
As a Specialist Science College the governors have decided that 10% of places are allocated on the basis of aptitude in Information Technology established by tests taken at the school.
The presence of an elder brother or sister at Wrenn School at the time of the intended admission.
Attendance at a contributor school, with priority going to those from which 25% or more of the transferring year group have joined Wrenn in the past three years. The purpose of this is to ensure existing friendship groups can join Wrenn and enhance the smooth transition between phases. At present the link schools are All Saints Primary, Croyland Junior School, Victoria Junior School, Warwick Primary School, Our Lady's Junior School and Wilby Primary School. However the list does change and parents consult an up to date brochure.
The proximity of a child’s residence to the school with priority given to those who live closer to Wrenn School. Where criteria 1 to 4 above have failed to resolve the issue of over subscription, this final criteria of distance will be used as the tie-breaker.
If for any reason a pupil is not offered a place at Wrenn School, the parents or guardians may appeal in writing to the school governors. They will, in due course, be invited to state their case before an independent appeal panel.
Children, who do not obtain a place at the school because of over subscription, will in most circumstances be offered an alternative school in the immediate area.
If the roll for any year group falls below the admissions number the school will admit pupils in order of the above criteria and through working, in a co-operative manner, with the local placement panel.
Sixth Form Admissions The governors welcome applications from students for entry to the Sixth Form. The number of intended admissions for the year is 250 of which up to 30 maybe external to the school.
All applicants will be:
Invited for interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to explore the students choice of courses and likely Career Action Plan.
Holding suitable passes at GCSE with five subjects at least grade C or above if considering AS or A Level courses.
Where applications exceed the number of places available priority will be given to students with special educational needs and then in the following order
Looked after children
Students already attending Wrenn School
Students who have a brother or sister already attending Wrenn School
Proximity of the student's residence to Wrenn School with priority being given to those those who live closest
Where the above criteria fail to resolve the issue of over subscription the finial criteria of distance will be used as the tie-breaker.
General The school will agree any changes to its admissions arrangements with the admissions forum, the Local Authority and other schools in the area. It will establish arrangements for appeals against non admissions which will be independent of the school. Admission Process For New Pupils Entering Year 7 In September
Please read the Admission Policy carefully. This and details on how to apply can be found on in the school brochure. Wrenn welcomes applications from all families who would like to obtain a place at the school. However, in periods of over-subscription, places are allocated on strict criteria. Please make sure you are familiar with these. The application process starts in late September when the school brochure becomes available and is usually completed in early November.
